Ramsey County attorney Susan Gaertner, a DFL candidate for governor, sends out weekly emails that include her take on the week's news. This week her take includes her theory on why she believes Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Eric Magnuson decided to announce his resignation:

"From my view, Eric Magnuson was one of Governor Pawlenty's best appointments, but I would bet that the Governor is not all that unhappy to see him leave. Magnuson spent two distinguished years respectfully fighting for an adequately funded court system. As Chief Justice, Magnuson understood that the judiciary is not just another state agency but an independent branch of government; one that must be fully functional in a civilized society that relies on the courts to resolve civil disputes and dispense criminal justice. While Magnuson stated "personal reasons" for leaving, I have to believe his frustration with Pawlenty's budget slashing finally wore him down."

Here's what Magnuson said Thursday in his resignation letter to Gov. Tim Pawlenty:

"It has been my privilege to serve as Chief Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court for the past two years. I have found the position to be both challenging and rewarding. However, for reasons personal to me and my family, I have decided to step down and return to private practice. My last date of service will be June 30, 2010.

Sincerely,

Eric J. Magnuson

Chief Justice"

Several people who know Magnuson advised to take the chief justice's explanation at face value.
