Quick Q&A

MATT SHUBERT WOODBURY, SR.

TENNIS

How long have you been playing tennis? I started to take it seriously about five years ago.

What drew you to tennis? I was bored in the summer. My dad said, 'Let's go get some tennis racquets.' I decided I really like the game, and I started playing every day.

The best player you've ever played? [Four-time state champion] Dusty Boyer. Needless to say, I didn't do too well.

Describe your game: I'm a little over 6-foot-2, about 185 pounds. I play a power game.

Big serve? Yeah. I had it timed at about 110 [miles per hour] a couple of years ago. It's a weapon.

Down a break point in a close match. What is your go-to shot? Go for the big first serve outside.

How are you better this year? I think I've become a smarter player. I've always had the shots, I just didn't know how to use them.

Best tennis moment: Two years ago, we lost in the section finals to Eastview. It didn't matter that we lost. Just getting that far was so much fun.

Advice for young players: Just have fun and keep learning the game. Make sure to practice every day to get better.

Biggest rival? East Ridge. Gotta beat them.
