Quick Q&A: Bailey Hesse-Withbroe, Stillwater boys' cross-country

September 20, 2014 at 10:21PM

Enjoying his most successful high school season, Bailey Hesse-Withbroe is the No. 5-ranked boys' runner in Class 2A.

Q: You've moved into the upper tier of runners this season. Is that a surprise?

A: No, I think I'm running like I expected to run. But really, I don't care that much about what I'm doing as long as the team does well.

Q: How does it help to have a teammate like Eli Krahn, who is nationally ranked?

A: It's awesome to have him around. We hold each other accountable for every race and every workout. If one of us is having a bad today, the other pushes and pulls him along.

Q: Is there a friendly rivalry between the two of you?

A: We're not really rivals. He's a great friend and teammate. But there is a little bit of pushing each other to perform up to the standards we've set.

Q: What is your best race so far this season?

A: The Faribault Invite on Oct. 5. That was nice. I won the race and we won as a team. And I PR'd [personal record].

Q: You will be in the Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday, a huge meet with high school and college teams. Is that an opportunity for exposure?

A: Yes. My college plans aren't set yet. I think it's a chance to show how I can run in a high-pressure race. If I have a strong race and finish in a high position, I can hopefully lead Stillwater to victory and show what I'm capable of.

Q: How important is nutrition to you as a runner?

A: Extremely important. You need to put the right fuel into your body to perform well.

Q: Any recommendations?

A: I'm big on anti-inflammatories that help you recover. A lot of berries and fruits. Not much dairy or red meat. Those can inflame tissue.

Q: What is your favorite pre-race food?

A: Probably good old-fashioned rice. I eat it a lot. You can do a lot of things with it, like make risotto or add seasoning. My favorite is to add brown sugar and honey.
