The term "family" is bandied about often in high school sports as athletes search for ways to define the strong bonds that develop among teammates. For the Bloomington Jefferson boys' tennis team, however, the word has a far more literal meaning.

The Jaguars recently won their second consecutive South Suburban title, finishing the conference season undefeated and running their string of league victories to 18. They have done it largely on the strength of two families that have produced five of Jefferson's top 10 players.

The Punnoose family has provided Josh, a senior who plays No. 2 singles; Jonah, a sophomore who plays No. 1 doubles; and Joe, a seventh-grader holding down a key spot at No. 3 doubles.

They are joined by the McNutt brothers: Matt, a senior at No. 3 singles, and Andrew, a junior who teams with Jonah Punnoose at No. 1 doubles.

"It's been a real benefit to our team," Jefferson coach Nick Hupton said. "You can really see the similarities in their games. Overall, we have an amazing group of guys on this team and those two families have been a big part of our success."

Wayzata girl, boy tops in golf

In the most recent MGA High School rankings, the No. 1 golfers in both boys' and girls' rankings is a junior from Wayzata.

Jack Holmgren sits on top of the MGA's boys' rankings while Sarah Burnham is the top-ranked girl in the state.

Both Wayzata teams are ranked No. 2 in the state. The boys' team sits just behind Lake Conference rival Minnetonka while Detroit Lakes edged the girls for the top spot.

The MGA lumps all teams and players together in its rankings, disregarding class designation.
