Liz Davey, 19, prepared to shoot for the first time at Burnsville Rifle and Pistol Range on Saturday. She had asked Tim Magdik, her mother's boyfriend, to help her get her hunting license and teach her to hunt. Now that she has completed a firearms safety course, she's ready to go on her first deer hunt. Magdik is honored that she sought his wisdom. "If she gets a deer," he says, "I'll be passing on my secret jerky recipe that's been in our family since the 1920s." For Davey, the hunt is an extension of her philosophy that in order to progress, people must regress and learn the basics of survival. For Magdik, it is about passing on knowledge to the next generation. In fact, Davey will carry the .32-caliber Winchester that has been used by every first-time hunter in Magdik's family since 1935.
