I've been talking to people who were at Friday night's boys' basketball game between Eden Prairie and Eastview at Eastview. After Eastview handed top-ranked 4A Eden Prairie its first loss of the season 56-51, there were some tense moments.

A couple of emailers have described it as a brawl, but it sounds like that language may be too strong. I was told that some words were exchanged during the hard-fought, physical game, and that continued during the postgame handshake between the coaches and teams.

Since Eastview's victory was a clear upset (the Lightning have a record of 8-10 and Eden Prairie is 17-1), lots of Eastview students ran onto the court after the game. That apparently didn't help the situation. As administrators tried to clear the court, pushing took place, insults were traded between the teams and fans. It was described to me as more shoving than punching.

Obviously this was a bad situation, which no one wants to see happen. I don't know if any MSHSL bylaws were violated, if the officials filed a report with the MSHSL or if any suspensions or other penalties will follow. I will continue to make calls.
