Fatal crash in Eden Prairie under criminal investigation

The crash of a speeding Corvette in Eden Prairie that left a Marine dead is under criminal investigation, police said Tuesday.

The crash along Eden Prairie Road on Aug. 1 killed Kyle A. Boline, 23, of New Hope.

Boline was one of two people in the Corvette when it crashed into two utility poles near Kurtz Lane about 8 p.m.

Both occupants were thrown from the vehicle, suggesting that neither was wearing a seat belt.

Another man in the car has so far survived the crash and was hospitalized. Authorities have declined to release his name or explain the extent of his injuries.

"This [crash] is not typical," said Police Lt. Bill Wyffels. "There is an investigation to see if there is a crime."

As for who was driving, Wyffels wasn't prepared to answer that question, saying, "It wasn't easy to get all the details at the scene."

He also would not say whether either man in the car was the owner.

There have been no arrests, and Wyffels declined to say why a criminal investigation is being pursued.

The afternoon after the crash, the city released a statement saying, "A preliminary investigation indicates excessive speed likely played a role in the accident." The State Patrol is assisting in the investigation.

Boline was a "proud Marine who served in Afghanistan," according to his online obituary. Among his survivors is his wife, Rachel.

Sheriff: Jealousy fueled murder-suicide at ex's home

A murder-suicide in Otter Tail County was sparked when a woman went to her ex-boyfriend's home with her new boyfriend to claim her pet dog, authorities said Tuesday.

On the night of July 31 the woman and the two men were in the home east of New York Mills when Jacob Geiser, 23, fatally shot Ethan M. Honer, 20, of Dent, Minn., before turning the gun on himself.

"The woman came to pick up her dog and brought along the new boyfriend," Sheriff Brian Schlueter said. "[Geiser] wasn't supposed to be home."

The woman called 911. Sheriff's deputies and emergency medical personnel arrived and Honer was declared dead at the scene.

Geiser was flown to St. Cloud Hospital, where he died.
