Police in Superior, Wis., shot and killed an armed man who officers say raised a handgun toward them during a pursuit Friday night.

A little before 5 p.m. Friday, authorities responded to the Walgreens at N. 21st and Tower Avenue in Superior on a report of shots fired, according to a news release from Superior police.

When officers arrived, they learned that a man had held up a woman at gunpoint in a parking lot and demanded her car keys. The man tried to start her car, but when he was unable to, he fled the scene in the car he had arrived in.

A little later, officers found the suspect's vehicle, but when they tried to stop him, he sped off. Officers pursued the suspect until he abandoned his vehicle and made a run for it. Several officers chased the man and saw that he was carrying a large handgun as he ran through a field, according to police. The suspect didn't obey orders to drop his weapon.

As the man approached a trailer park, he turned toward police while raising his gun, according to the police. Officers fired multiple rounds at the man until he fell to the ground and dropped the gun.

The man died at the scene despite efforts to resuscitate him.

His identity has not been confirmed. The identities of the officers also have not yet been released.

Superior police and the Douglas County Sheriff's Office are processing the scene. The Wisconsin Division of Criminal Investigation is also assisting with the investigation.

A news conference about the shooting will be held Saturday.
