A person walking on railroad tracks in Coon Rapids was struck and killed by a train on Sunday, authorities confirmed.

Coon Rapids police said the incident occurred near Northdale Boulevard, but didn't provide details on the victim or how the accident happened.

Amy McBeth, spokeswoman for the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway, said an eastbound BNSF train struck a person walking on the railroad tracks at a spot that was not designated for pedestrians.

"It is extremely dangerous, and illegal, to be on railroad tracks or to cross railroad tracks at any location other than a designated street or pedestrian crossing," McBeth said in an e-mail.

Anoka County sheriff's and BNSF personnel responded to the scene, she said.
