Things are so slow around the Capitol these days that Senate Majority Leader Larry Pogemiller suggested a break in the legislative session.

"I am open to a recess," Pogemiller said Friday. "We'll have enough to do next week, but then it gets a little spotty."

Lawmakers must adjourn by May 17, but Pogemiller said the Legislature could take a break around the time of the Democratic and Republican state conventions, which start later this month.

"I don't think there's a reason to have people sitting around here looking for opportunities to create mischief," Pogemiller said.

He said he has not formerly talked to House leaders about taking a break.

Lawmakers have already approved many of the big proposals of the session, including a bonding bill, a package of budget cuts and a new health care program for the poor.

Now they are awaiting clarity about the impact of the federal health care overhaul. Once they know that, they can start cutting about $150 million from the health and human services budget.
