Representatives from the Urban Land Institute (ULI) will be in St. Paul next week to give input on the proposed Rondo Land Bridge, which would stretch over Interstate 94 and reconnect the Rondo neighborhood.

The ULI group, which includes panelists from California, Washington state, New Jersey, Missouri and Washington, D.C., will tour the neighborhood, interview residents, review data and give recommendations on the land bridge project, the group announced Wednesday.

Construction of Interstate 94 half a century ago cut through the Rondo neighborhood, destroying hundreds of homes and businesses. The land bridge would cover part of the interstate and add land for housing, businesses, parkland and other amenities while cars drive through a tunnel below.

The nonprofit ReConnect Rondo has been working on the land bridge idea for about two years, and the project is still in the early stages. In January, ReConnect Rondo and the University of Minnesota's Minnesota Design Center unveiled three possible designs at a community meeting.

The institute is a nonprofit research group that convenes authorities on real estate and land use to advise on complex planning projects.
