A man wanted by police tried to run over officers sent to arrest him at his east-central Minnesota home, setting off a brief chase that ended with his arrest, authorities said Monday.
Louis R. Workman Jr., 29, of Sandstone, Minn., was apprehended Sunday evening in rural Pine County, about a mile from the home where a sheriff's deputy and the State Patrol attempted to arrest him on a felony warrant, the Sheriff's Office said.
According to the Sheriff's Office:
A deputy and a State Patrol trooper arrived at a home on Water Lily Drive, east of Hinckley, to arrest Workman.
"A confrontation occurred" in the yard, then Workman got in a vehicle and sped toward the officers, who were on foot in slippery conditions.
The two officers, "fearing for their safety," fired several shots at the vehicle. One of the shots struck Workman in the hand. He fled north on Wildlife Road. About a mile from the scene of the shooting, he was forced into a ditch and arrested.
Workman was taken to Essentia Hospital in Sandstone. The deputy and the state trooper were not injured.
Workman was scheduled to appear in a Pine County courtroom next week for a probation violation hearing in connection with felony charges filed in August for marijuana possession and fleeing a State Patrol trooper in a van. The drug charge was dismissed, and he pleaded guilty to the other charge.
