A half-dozen cool things in music, from two points of view:

Ruthie Foster, the Dakota. Unlike her February show with Eric Bibb, this time she was with her band, including local musician Scottie Miller. That allowed her more range to perform new songs from her CD "Promise of a Brand New Day" and old songs, including my favorite, "Phenomenal Woman."

"Motown: The Musical," the Orpheum. As a fan of musicals, I am sometimes drawn in by the story, stage production, acting or music. However, with "Motown," it was all about the memories for me. Though not the best musical production, this one had me tapping my toes, snapping my fingers and singing along with all the great classics.

Lisa Fischer, the Dakota. I've never witnessed a performer so grounded, present and connected to her craft. You don't just see or hear Fischer; you experience her. My musical highlight of 2014.

"The Kennedy Center Honors." Once again, the musical performances were the cherry on top of a special night. Highlights: Jennifer Hudson's simply gorgeous "Simply Beautiful"; Sam Moore and Mavis Staples' spirited "Take Me to the River" saluting Al Green, and Bruce Springsteen's mesmerizing "I Hung My Head" for Sting.

The Bad Plus, the Dakota. Pianist Ethan Iverson brings crafty nonchalance; drummer Dave King radiates joy and whimsy, and bassist Reid Anderson provides the glue. The musicians listen to one another and display an admirable chemistry, making this inventive jazz trio special.

Ella Henderson, "Chapter One." The British pop-soul siren, 18, may not be the next Adele, but she could be the first new pop star to emerge in 2015. Out Jan. 13.
