A half-dozen cool things in music, from two points of view:

Jakob Dylan, "Late Night With David Letterman." Taking a break from the Wallflowers, he played "Something Good This Way Comes" from his first solo CD. He can still write a catchy tune with an infectious chorus.

John Hiatt, Pantages Theatre. After a fan yelled "Walk On," Hiatt accommodated with a perfect rendition of that 1995 love ballad. "Memphis in the Meantime" turned into a three-part sing-along, and Hiatt played nearly half of his new CD.

The Zombies, Milwaukee Summerfest. "Time of the Season" soared thanks to Colin Blunstone's stellar vocals, and keyboard wizard Rod Argent added his signature texture on "She's Not There" and the Argent anthem "Hold Your Head Up." Forty years later this band sounds better than ever.

Lil Wayne, "Tha Carter III." The album has sold 1.68 million copies in four weeks, a heartening figure considering that he's been overexposed via mixtapes and guest spots and that no CD sells big numbers anymore. But it's a fascinating disc, with fresh concepts and unexpected depth.

Phish reunion, Rothbury Festival.. Mike Gordon sat in briefly during Trey Anastasio's solo set, then Anastasio sat in with Gordon's group. And Jon Fishman joined in, too, for the encore of a Beatles tune. Onstage is where a full-fledged Phish reunion should take place.

The Zombies, Taste of Minnesota. The British hitmakers broke up before "Odyssey and Oracle" was released in 1968, so they were really into "premiering" six "O&O" songs live, including "For Emily" and "Time of the Season." Colin Blunstone can't find all his high notes but hasn't lost his charm, and Rod Argent still gets down '60s style on the keyboards.
