A half-dozen cool things in music, from two points of view:

Levon Helm Band, Fitzgerald Theater. During a rollicking 22-song set, the band's drummer brought fans to their feet with a jazzy "Ophelia" complete with tuba, a romping version of Dr. John's "Mardi Gras Day" and, of course, "The Weight." What throat cancer?

"Love Story" and "White Horse" by Taylor Swift. Listen to them back to back. She sings both sides of a fairy tale: A Romeo and Juliet with a happy ending and a knight in shining armor gone wrong. There's such conviction in both that it's hard to imagine the same person is singing them.

Derek Trucks Band, Minnesota Zoo. Not only was Trucks articulate in an array of styles (blues, rock, soul, gospel, jazz) but he is the most relaxed, calm, unshowy bluesman you've ever seen. Props to gritty, soulful singer Mike Mattison of Minneapolis.

Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson with Justin Townes Earle, Fitzgerald Theater. A terrific double bill of singer/songwriters who are witty, entertaining and deeply moving musically. Earle came across like a tall, vaudevillian version of his dad, Steve. Chambers and Nicholson charmed with Aussie twang and wife-and-husband mock-bickering.

"Stone Me: The Wit and Wisdom of Keith Richards," compiled by Mark Blake. These quotes from the Rolling Stones guitarist are priceless Keith-sakes. Such as: "The Beatles were a great enema. That makes us a great toilet bowl." A perfect bathroom book.
