Michael Phelps wears boot cast on right ankle; apparently got hurt playing golf

July 28, 2013 at 4:35PM

BARCELONA, Spain — If Michael Phelps is planning a comeback, it's on hold for now.

The most decorated Olympian in history was wearing a large boot cast on his right ankle and foot. He was limping Sunday at a sponsor's appearance at the world championships.

Phelps told some officials that he recently got hurt playing golf, apparently when he stepped in a hole.

Phelps' agent did not immediately return a request for comment.

Phelps retired from swimming after last year's London Olympics with a record 22 career medals.

There has been speculation he's considering a return for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.
