Adrian Peterson insisted eating shrimp was the reason he nearly missed last Sunday's 28-19 victory in Detroit. The initial report that the Vikings running back got sick after swallowing dipping tobacco started from a joke, he said.

"You know what's so funny. The situation was just so simple and I really just wasn't feeling well, but they had to report it and coach [Norv] Turner made a joke, and it just took off, about the dip," Peterson said Wednesday in a conference call with Chicago media.

When asked to clarify if it was actually shrimp that caused his allergic reaction, Peterson said "Yeah, I had shrimp." It has been well-documented that Peterson is allergic to various seafood and carries an EpiPen with him often to deal with these allergies.

"People would be like, 'Why do you eat shrimp when you're allergic to it?' " he said. "Well, here's the thing: I've eaten shrimp my entire life. … Shrimp is like a little reaction. Lobster and especially scallops, that's when I really swell up. So I kind of get away with it, eating shrimp."

Peterson recovered enough to get 19 carries for 98 yards, most of it on the fifth-longest run of his career, a 75-yarder.

Peterson got ill Saturday, when the Vikings added him to the injury report. They had been criticized the week before for failing to put defensive end Everson Griffen, who got ill before the Chiefs game on Oct. 18, on the report as required by NFL rules.

"I just needed to lie down and get into a little fetal position and sleep it off," said Peterson, who ended up suffering hip, finger and ankle injuries against the Lions.

Anybody got the time?

Teddy Bridgewater will make sure he does a better job managing the clock in his second visit to Chicago on Sunday. That's if he can spot a game or play clock that's working.

The Vikings quarterback took a minor dig at how last year's Vikings-Bears game in Chicago ended, with the clock out for the final three minutes.

"I've only played there one year, but I know last year, the game clock going out made it difficult last year," Bridgewater said.

The game clock at Soldier Field went out for stretches during the Bears' 21-13 victory last November. It went out for good with 2 minutes, 54 seconds left in the game.

With 2:03 left, the Vikings took possession of the ball. They trailed by eight points, with no timeouts and 66 yards away from the end zone.

Without an operating clock, Bridgewater had to rely on the referee announcing the time remaining after each play.

"That was the first time I ever experienced anything like that," Bridgewater said. "I think we could have handled the situation a little better. When you're not aware of how much time is left on the clock when you're down on the playing field, it forces you to make some decisions that you probably wouldn't have made if you were aware of the game clock or the play clock.

"I hope it doesn't happen again this year."

Bridgewater ended up throwing an interception, in part, because he thought it might be the final play of the game.

Coming back

Backup defensive end Justin Trattou was seen without a boot on his left foot for the first time since injuring it during Week 3 against San Diego and said he hopes to start practicing this week.

He said there were no bone breaks, just a sprain.

"Probably not [Wednesday], but going to try and get out there by the end of the week," Trattou said. "Any competitor wants to be out there every second. It's obviously not a fun time for me, but the team is doing great. We couldn't be happier. We're headed in the right direction. I just can't wait to get back out there and be a part of it."

Trattou recorded his first career interception and had one tackle in Week 2 against Detroit.

Injury report

Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said cornerback Jabari Price was placed on season-ending injured reserve Tuesday because he needed shoulder surgery.

Five players didn't practice Wednesday including Peterson, wide receiver Jarius Wright (concussion) and linebacker Audie Cole (finger).

All three stretched with the team and Wright ran sprints while the rest of the team ran through warmup drills.

Wright left Sunday's game because of concussion-like symptoms. Cole had his right hand wrapped at Winter Park on Wednesday.

Defensive tackle Sharrif Floyd (knee/ankle) remained out, along with Trattou. Fullback Zach Line (neck), wide receiver Adam Thielen (ankle) and tight end Rhett Ellison (concussion) were limited in Wednesday's practice in full pads. Defensive tackle Tom Johnson (knee) fully participated.
