LANDOVER, MD. -- Vikings running back Adrian Peterson left today's game against Washington after 1-yard run in the second quarter because of an injury to his right ankle and did not return in the quarter.

Peterson's return was announced as "probable" in the press box but Toby Gerhart was on the field for the Vikings' final drive of the first half. Update: Peterson's return was downgraded to "questionable" in the third quarter. Peterson also had black tape wrapped around the outside of his right shoe.

Peterson was hurt when Washington linebacker Lorenzo Alexander rolled up on his ankle. Peterson hobbled off the field and was tended to on a table behind the bench by head athletic trainer Eric Sugarman and doctor Joel Boyd.

Sugarman took tape off Peterson's ankle and retaped it. Peterson then attempted to get loose by walking on the sideline. He had his helmet back as the Vikings began their final drive of the half but remained a spectator.

Peterson had 36 yards rushing on six carries and a touchdown in the half and went over the 1,000-yard mark for the fourth consecutive season when he gained 3 yards on his final carry of the first quarter. Peterson also had a 34-yard reception in the first quarter as the Vikings tied the score at 7 on their opening possession of the game.

Peterson did not return on the Vikings' first possession of the second half, which ended with running back Toby Gerhart scoring on a 5-yard run to give Minnesota a 14-7 lead.
