Friday's federal budget deal maintained the Pell Grant maximum of $5,500, according to several news websites.

The Chronicle of Higher Education says:

Many folks in higher ed had worried that that maximum amount would be reduced. In February, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a measure that would shrink next year's maximum per-student Pell Grant by $845.

Such a cut would have had a ripple effect on other financial aid -- including the Minnesota State Grant program -- that use the Pell Grant as a base. As I said in a February article:
