A pedestrian was struck and killed late at night on a road north of the Twin Cities, authorities said Tuesday.

The incident occurred about 11:30 p.m. Monday in Bradford Township, roughly 9 miles northeast of St. Francis, according to the Isanti County Sheriff's Office.

"It is early in the investigation, and it's unknown why the person was in the roadway," said Sheriff Chris Caulk.

The victim was male, and his identity was being withheld pending notification of relatives, Caulk said.

According to the sheriff:

First responders and sheriff's personnel arrived and found the pedestrian in the road on 285th Avenue NW. near Verdin Street in Bradford Township. Emergency dispatch audio said the person was declared dead at the scene.

The car's driver remained at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement. According to dispatch audio, the driver also was a male, and his parents came to the scene soon afterward.
