'The X Factor' shocker!

"The X Factor" is a show that doesn't seem to have it. So Simon Cowell is dumping two judges, including Paula Abdul, and the host in an effort to give the show a boost.

Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul, in happier times

It came as no surprise to hear this morning that "X Factor" producer Simon Cowell is dropping over-his-head Steve Jones as host for next season and I'm not terribly shocked that he's also not inviting back Nicole Scherzinger. But no Paula Abdul?

Yes, according to reports, only Cowell and L.A. Reid will return next season. After lifting my jaw off the floor, I gave it some thought. It makes sense. As my colleague and reality-show addict Randy Salas pointed out, in "X Factor," unlike "Idol," you actually have to have musical chops and be able to teach. Nicole and Paula are vivid personalties and decent dancers, but I wouldn't want them as voice coaches.

So who will Cowell turn to? Assuming he's going to stick with females, I wouldn't be surprised if he tried to get Mariah Carey or Shania Twain. Cowell was also cuckoo for Lady Gaga, but I doubt the pop star would sign on. Or would she?

Whom would you like to see fill Abdul's seat? Vote in our poll here.
