A 30-year-old Rochester man was charged Thursday with fatally shooting the driver of a car he was a passenger in early Wednesday, according to police in the Olmsted County city.

Abdulkadir Omar Mohamed is charged with shooting Abdullahi Omar Sheikh, 31, of Rochester, at about 2:20 a.m. Wednesday at an intersection northwest of the Mayo Clinic, said Rochester police.

An ambulance happened upon the scene and the crew called police about what they thought was no more than a vehicle crash, said Capt. John Sherwin.

The crew saw two men outside the disabled car "in some sort of argument" and then "drag a guy out of the vehicle" into the street, Sherwin said.

"One of the males fled on foot" while the victim was "unresponsive in the middle of the road" with a gunshot wound to the upper torso, the captain said. A gun was recovered nearby.

Mohamed, who remained at the scene after the shooting, was in the back of the car when he fired the fatal shot, Sherwin said.

He is charged with second-degree murder, second-degree manslaughter and other counts.

Sheikh was taken to the nearby emergency room, where he died.
