Park Square Theatre has announced a 2014-15 season with 19 projects on two stages. The St. Paul troupe will open its second stage, the 200-seat Boss Thrust, in September with 10 productions planned. That stage will be in the basement of the Hamm Building.

The season includes several regional premieres and "guest artist" productions. Upstairs on the 350-seat proscenium, the biggest production will be "The Color Purple." Also notable is "33 Variations" by Moises Kaufman, which starred Jane Fonda on Broadway and a new "Sherlock Holmes" play by Jeffrey Hatcher.

The proscenium season opens with "Sexy Laundry" Sept. 12-28. The play by Michele Riml is a popular Canadian comic romance.

Kaufman's "33 Variations" will run Oct. 17-Nov. 2, directed by James Rocco, producing artistic director at the Ordway Center. The play is about a musicologist who has a conversation with Beethoven, her favorite composer.

Two reprises — "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and "2 Hands 4 Pianos" — follow. The Shakespeare is a school show that will run evenings Nov. 14-16. Peter Vitale and Michael Pearce Donley return with the popular piano play, Nov. 28-Dec. 21.

Lewis Whitlock III will direct and choreograph the first Twin Cities production of "The Color Purple," running Jan. 23-Feb. 15. Oprah Winfrey produced the Broadway musical, based on Alice Walker's book and the film.

"Shooting Star" by Steven Dietz will run March 27-April 19. The regional premiere is about two old lovers who reunite during a blizzard. Rick Shiomi will direct the Julia Cho play "The Language Archive," May 15-31 and Hatcher's world premiere of "Sherlock Holmes & the Ice Palace Murders" will run June 26-July 19.

The new thrust stage opens with "Mr. Burns, a Post-Electric Play," by Anne Washburn. Inspired by "The Simpsons," this play was a sensation last fall in New York. It runs Sept. 12-Oct. 5.

"The House on Mango Street," which playwright Amy Ludwig adapted from Sandra Cisneros' coming-of-age novel, runs Oct. 31-Nov. 16. "Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol," a repeat from a few years ago, will run during the holiday season, Dec. 5-21.

The thrust is also intended to host guest productions. Shanan Custer and Carolyn Pool bring their charming show "2 Sugars, Room for Cream" Jan 2-18; Brian Sostek and Megan McClellan follow with their classic "Trick Boxing," Jan. 29-Feb. 8.

David Mann adapts and directs "Romeo and Juliet" Feb. 27-March 8. Aditi Kapil will direct "The Other Place," by Sharr White, a psychological thriller that was a 2011 off-Broadway hit, April 3-26.

Park Square's Boss Stage producing partners — Sandbox, Theatre Pro Rata and Girl Friday — will stage shows in May, June and July of 2015. Titles have not been released.
