A paramedic was killed when the ambulance he was riding in hit a stalled semitrailer truck in Brooklyn Center on Monday night, the State Patrol said.

"Fatal injury crash, involving an ambulance and semi," the patrol tweeted just before 8:30 p.m.

The semi was stalled on I-694 near the split with I-94, said Lt. Tiffani Nielson.

Nielson said the semi was there for about 15 minutes when the ambulance coming from I-694 was attempting to merge and struck the semi.

The paramedic in the passenger seat of the ambulance died at the scene. The driver was taken to North Memorial Medical Center with noncritical injuries. The driver of the semi was not injured, Nielson said.

Eastbound I-694 at Shingle Creek Pkwy in Brooklyn Center was closed for a few hours. Traffic was diverted to eastbound I-94.
