The NHL grabbed a good headline Monday, cracking down on repeat offender Raffi Torres of San Jose by suspending him for 41 games (half a season) for his illegal check to the head of the Ducks' Jakob Silfverberg during a preseason game Saturday.

Torres had served multiple suspensions before, so this was a good chance for the league to send a message that such things won't be tolerated.

But it's also easier to send that message to a player who has just 10 goals the past three seasons as opposed to a more marquee player in the league.

early returns You don't judge a trade after four games, but Nick Foles has outperformed Sam Bradford so far this NFL season.

happy return One-quarter of the way through the NFL season, your league rushing leader is ... Adrian Peterson of the Vikings with 372 yards.
