When Leslie Frazier was officially named Vikings head coach after the season, it was expected that he would keep Fred Pagac as his defensive coordinator.

Pagac ran the defense the final six games this season after Frazier was promoted to interim head coach. The two have a good relationship and Frazier said a number of times that he liked how Pagac handled himself in that role.

The move was made official this week, making Pagac a defensive coordinator for the first time since 1996-99 when he held that position at Ohio State.

Pagac said the final six games this season were "the most fun I've had in 10 years since I've been in the NFL. Being able to call defenses -- that was something that I enjoyed doing and had a lot of fun doing that." Pagac served as the Vikings linebackers coach since 2006. Anyone who has watched him coach his position at training camp knows that Pagac is a colorful coach who preaches an aggressive mentality. Pagac played and coached under Woody Hayes at Ohio State and referred to himself as "old school" in this story. Pagac said his personality or approach won't change in his new role. "I'm not going to try to be somebody I'm not," he said. "When you're coaching, you've got to be yourself and let your personality flow and obviously everybody has different personalities. As a coach, you're trying to find the hot button to your players and work that way." As far as changes in scheme, both Frazier and Pagac said they don't anticipate any dramatic changes. Pagac likely will call more blitzes -- he brought extra pressure on 50 percent of the plays in the victory against the Eagles late in the season -- but both coaches said their personnel will dictate how they approach things. "There are going to be some things that schematically we'll take a look at but it's going to be important that we improve in certain areas, without question," Frazier said. "There won't be a dramatic overhaul by any means." The defense likely will have a new look in terms of personnel. Ray Edwards, Pat Williams, Chad Greenway and Ben Leber are free agents. The secondary also could see changes after struggling all season. "I think we have a great nucleus defensively in all areas," Pagac said when asked about young players that could step up next season. "Linebacker-wise, we have some good, young backers. Secondary, you've got Chris Cook coming back from his injury at the end of the year there. Asher Allen's coming back as a young corner. Defensive line, you've got guys like Everson Griffen and Brian Robison as young players that are coming through. There's a good nucleus to work with now." Pagac was asked what area needs the most improvement. "Until we know who is going to be here, I'm not going to make any statements on that right now," he said. "I like our nucleus. I think we have a chance to be a pretty good defense. I think we'll have to wait and see what our final roster is going to end up being here."
