Oscar nomination flub creates golden moment for Conan O'Brien

Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs quickly caught and corrected her verbal gaffe during her reading of the Oscar nominations on Thursday morning, but it didn't matter. She said "Dick Poop" instead of Dick Pope, and that was all the Internet needed to take her gaffe and run with it.

Suddenly, John Travolta's "Adele Dazeem" — while introducing Idina Menzel on last year's Oscars telecest — doesn't sound so bad at all.

Conan O'Brien quickly picked up on Isaacs' mistake, and made it so much worse. He tweaked the audio of her subsequent Oscar nomination announcements and substituted "poop" into them as much as humanly possible.

The result was both stupid and hilarious, with the audience caught between laughing and groaning.

"We're all too mature to laugh at that," O'Brien said after playing her initial flub, but of course that wasn't true at all. "You're hearing laughter of compassion," he explained as everyone around him rolled with laughter.

Dick Pope was nominated in the cinematography category for his work on "Mr. Turner." While talking with the media about his nominations, he told USA Today, "I have been called a lot worse in my time," adding that he felt sorry for Isaacs.

"Conan" airs weeknights at 10 p.m. on TBS.
