The second Salsa Oremageddon mountain bike race Oct. 8 is another indicator of the sport's rapid surge in Minnesota, and specifically at Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area in Ironton, Minn.

The race happens in the Cuyuna park, which has 30 miles of singletrack ranging from easy to expert level. The International Mountain Bicycling Association regards Cuyuna as one of the top trail systems in the world.

Last year's race, put on by the Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Crew and others, drew 300 riders. This year's cap is 500, and is close to filling, said crew chief Aaron Hautala in an e-mail.

The Oremageddon has three distances: 50, 25 and 12 miles. The race is a bookend to another mountain bike crew event: the 45NRTH Whiteout races in February.
