On the GOP chopping block

The $900 million in spending cuts passed by the GOP-led House on Wednesday would do the following:

• Cut local government aid by $487 million over two years.

• Reduce state agency budgets by $100 million this fiscal year. Those cuts must exclude general and special education, military and veterans programs, financial aid, disaster relief, training programs or correctional facilities.

• Cut higher education funding by $185 million over two years.
