The Doyle & Debbie Show

Opening: David Andrew Anderson and Kim Kivens play a country-music duo trying to make something out of nothing. He's a has-been and she's a wannabe who thinks it's a good idea to hitch herself to his falling star. The show is described as both satire and homage to the legendary work of such greats as George Jones, Tammy Wynette, Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn. It was written by Minnesota native Bruce Arntson. Chris Jones of the Chicago Tribune raved about a production in the Windy City as the funniest thing he'd seen since "The Book of Mormon." Can Anderson and Kivens — fine denizens of the Twin Cities small theater scene — live up to that? (7:30 p.m. Fri.-Sat. & Wed.-Thu.; 2 p.m. Sat.-Sun. Ends May 11. New Century Theatre, inside City Center, 615 Hennepin Av. S., Mpls.; $16-$34, 612-455-9501 or HennepinTheatreTrust.org)

GRAYDON ROYCE

Strumply Peter

Opening: Michael Sommers has been plumbing the European fairy tale oeuvre lately and this time he gets into Heinrich Hoffmann. A 19th-century German (of course), Hoffmann wrote cautionary tales meant both to entertain children and scare them into proper behavior. In "Strumply," children will be ground up to be baked into cakes to sweeten them. Sommers, with writer Joseph Evans and composer Eric Jensen, has conceived a toy opera that uses his usual bag of invention — puppets, stop-action cartoons and real people. Liz Schacterle and Noah Sommers Haas are among the humans. (7:30 p.m. Fri.-Sat. & Thu., 4 p.m. Sun. Ends March 9. Open Eye Figure Theatre, 506 E. 24th St., Mpls.; $10-$15, www.openeyetheatre.org) G.R.

OTRO TEATRO

Opens Thursday: Uruguayan-born and Brooklyn-based choreographer luciana achugar is familiar to Twin Cities artists for her recent creations with Zenon Dance Company. Traditional notions of beauty are upended in this evening-length work that delves into the wildness within. Ritual, passion and fearlessness about completely defying expectations are all ways to describe achugar's singular approach to her movement and performance. This is sure to be another fine example of the synergy that has developed between Zenon and the Bessie Award-winning dance maker. (8 p.m. Feb. 27-March 1. $20-$25. Walker Art Center, 1750 Hennepin Av. S., Mpls., 612-375-7600 or www.walkerart.org.)
