Why now? Because it's been weighing so heavily on his conscience all these years? Who knows. Money. Desire for attention. Need to fine-tune his rep so his deluded defenders will cling to the "self-defense" theory as proof he's really some sort of hero / victim. Really, he didn't have any choice.
