An Eden Prairie schools resource officer injured an ankle Wednesday morning while responding to a fight among a group of female students at Eden Prairie High School, a school spokesman said.

The report of the officer's injury resulted in additional police officers being called to the school, at 17185 Valley View Road, about 9:45 a.m.

Police said the officer, whose name was not released, was trying to break up the fight among six to eight girls when the injury occurred. "Based on what we know, she likely fell trying to intervene," said Bob Noyed, the district's director of communications and community relations.

Noyed said the girls who were involved in the fight will be "appropriately disciplined." He said he did not know why they were fighting.

A parent of one of the girls involved in the fight said it was triggered by an earlier dispute among the girls and that it had nothing to do with an episode earlier this month at the school.

In that incident, on March 7, two extra officers were called to the school after rumors spread on social media that a student had threatened to bring a gun to school, Principal Conn McCartan said at the time. In a letter sent to parents that week, McCartan reassured them that there appeared to be no real threat. The rumor of a student threatening to bring a gun to school had surfaced as the school was investigating tensions among some students about messages posted on Twitter but proved to be unfounded, school officials said.
