A police officer shot and killed a man inside a Richfield home Friday morning after responding to a report of a man with a knife, authorities said.

Hennepin County Maj. Kip Carver said police were called to the home in the 6600 block of Park Avenue S. shortly before 9 a.m.

Carver declined to release details or answer questions but called the case "a very active investigation" for the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office and said the public isn't at risk.

At the scene, police tape surrounded the area around the small rambler, where Kathy Brockmeier, 63, lives, according to state records.

Edith Anderson, 79, who lives across the street from the home, described the family who lives there as "very nice."

She said Brockmeier's nephew moved there a couple of years ago and described him as a "promising young lad."

"She's in shock," she said after comforting her. "I know she enjoyed all the times she spent with her nephew."

Anderson said she wasn't home when the shooting happened. Her son, Rod Anderson of Richfield, described the nephew as quiet.

"He was kind of a loner, he didn't come out much," he said.

The man worked a part-time job, he said, but he didn't know any other details.

The Richfield police officer was not injured in the incident. Richfield police declined to answer questions.
