For Dave Martens, last Sunday's wet snowfall was almost reason for an end zone dance.

"I would have told you I had no chance, until that snowfall," said Martens, who, thanks to that snow and the dry week that followed, was the winner of the January Guess the Snowfall contest.

The 3-inch snowfall Sunday pushed the Twin Cities January total to 4.6 inches. Having predicted 4.5, Martens had a strong hunch no one would be closer.

Martens, 31-year-old stay-at-home dad from Oakdale, said having lived most of his life in Minnesota just gave him a feeling there wouldn't be much snow in January. He's expecting more in March, but guessed "3 inches flat" for the February game.

"Winters have become a little milder, so I thought I'd err on the lighter side," he said. "And I don't want to shovel that much."

Entries for the February game, now closed, range from 2.8 inches, from Chip Stratman of Andover and Nancy Taklo of Savage – who could get knocked out this weekend -- to.the 18.4 inches from John Mastley of Lakeville, who described his guess as "wishful thinking." Drama already building!

Entries are closed for February. We'll have one last monthly game, for March, and then find the winner of the seasonal contest, as well. Good luck!
