OAK CREEK, Wis. — The Oak Creek police department plans a ceremony for the retirement of an officer seriously wounded while responding to the fatal rampage at the Sikh temple last year.

Lt. Brian Murphy was shot 12 times by the lone gunman as the attacker left the temple. The gunman later fatally shot himself after being wounded by another officer.

Murphy officially retired as of Wednesday and the ceremony is Friday at the department.

President Barack Obama singled out Murphy for recognition last month during a White House ceremony honoring police. Seven other officers who responded to the Sikh temple shootings also were honored.

Chief John Edwards says the department holds ceremonies for all retirees. He says they will likely do a recap of Murphy's career and have him say a few words.
