A Republican Senator is going after the cash of people who feel they are under-taxed.

Sen.Michelle Benson, R-Ham Lake, is proposing an "I'm not taxed enough already" check-off on tax returns. She will make her case for the idea next week. The bill has a hearing in the Senate Taxes Committee at 8:15 am on March 16.

Update: On Friday, Senate Majority Leader Amy Koch said Taxes Committee Chair Julianne Ortman would actually be making the case for the bill, since Benson will be out of the Capitol having a baby. (Congratulations to Sen. Benson.)

The measure, much like similar ones floated over the years, allows Minnesotans to voluntarily contribute more to the state's coffers.

Here's the measure:

Section 1. [290.433] I'M NOT TAXED ENOUGH ALREADY FUND CHECKOFF.

(a) An individual who files an income tax return or property tax refund claim form may designate on the original return that $1 or more shall be added to the tax or deducted from the refund that would otherwise be payable by or to that individual and paid into the general fund.

(b) All amounts designated by individuals under paragraph (a) must be deposited in the state treasury and credited to the general fund.

EFFECTIVE DATE.This section is effective for taxable years beginning after December 31, 2010.
