Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, the lovebirds-turned-Hollywood power couple who met while filming 1988's "Bull Durham," have called it quits after 23 years together.

Publicist Teal Cannady confirmed the split on Wednesday to People magazine and said no further comments were forthcoming. The couple separated over the summer, the publicist said.

Sarandon, 63, and Robbins, 51, have two sons together -- Jack Henry, 20, and Miles Guthrie, 17. Sarandon has a daughter, actress Eva Amurri, from a previous relationship.

Though they were together for more than two decades, the couple never married.

"I won't marry because I am too afraid of taking him for granted or him taking me for granted - maybe it will be a good excuse for a party when I am 80," Sarandon once said.

The couple also attracted attention for the difference in their ages and for their liberal political activism.

As a couple, they supported John Edwards' presidential candidacy but then shifted support to Barack Obama.

Besides "Bull Durham," other joint credits for the Oscar-owning tandem included the death-penalty drama "Dead Man Walking," the thriller "Cradle Will Rock" and the political satire "Bob Roberts."

Sarandon stars in "The Lovely Bones," opening worldwide next month.

Robbins, artistic director of the Actors' Gang theater group, last appeared in 2008's "City of Ember."
