No Mijares

Jose Mijares, who missed TwinsFest because of visa problems is the only no-show on Day 1 of Camp Twinkies

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said lefthander Joe Mijares has an unexpected issue come up and was unable to fly to Florida in time for the start of training camp.

The Twins hope Mijares flies in on Tuesday and joins camp on Wednesday.

The Twins are disappointed in Mijares, who missed TwinsFest and the Diamond Awards last month because he was late for his visa appointment. ``Everyone else is here," Gardenhire said.

MLB's mandatory reporting date is Mar. 2, so the Twins can't fine him. But pitchers need time to get ready for the season, and Mijares was scheduled to throw on Monday. The coaching staff didn't learn of Mijares' absence until this morning.

And the Twins can't wait to find out what condition the burly Mijares is in.

That reminds me of the funniest thing Patrick Reusse ever said.

Last year, Reusse is hacking away in the pressbox at Hammond Stadium when Mijares starts to warm up.

``I am having an out-of-body experience!" Reusse yells for all to hear. ``I am sitting in the pressbox, watching myself warm up in the bullpen!"

Anyway....

The only other injury concern is reliever Loek Van Mil, who has a sore shoulder and will go through long toss drills for a couple days before throwing in the bullpen

Sights not seen last spring but seen on Monday: Pat Neshek throwing in the bullpen and Joe Mauer running around the infield.
