The Gophers wrestling team, ranked No. 1 in the nation, opened its season with a 32-6 victory over Hofstra on Friday night at the Sports Pavilion.

The Gophers won eight of 10 bouts, including 13th-ranked David Thorn's upset of No. 4 Steve Bonanno at 125 pounds. Up 4-1 in the first period, Thorn capitalized on a takedown and scored a pin at the 3-minute mark.

No. 5 Chris Dardanes scored three takedowns and a reversal in the third period of a 9-5 victory at 133 pounds.

Hofstra scored in the 141 bout when No. 10 Luke Vaith outlasted No. 8 Nick Dardanes 6-4, earning three points for his team. Matt Spataro earned the second victory for the Pride at 149, over Tom Giaimo.

Seth Lange notched an overtime victory over the Pride's Tyler Banks at 157, scoring a takedown in the fourth overtime. His win lifted the energy in the gym and put the Gophers back on track to win.

Cody Yohn was next on the mat and dominated Nick Terdick, scoring five near falls in the first two periods in a 15-0 technical fall at 165.

No. 5 Logan Storley, No. 4 Kevin Steinhaus and No. 10 Scott Schiller each scored major decisions in their respective weight classes. Storley took down Jermaine John 12-1 at 174. Steinhaus shut out Taras Luzhnyy 10-0 at 184 pounds. At 197, Schiller defeated Victor Pozsonyi in a 14-4 major decision.
