You might recall that a truck hit the I-35W overpass at Lake Street in south Minneapolis last month. MnDOT will start repairing the damage tonight.

Lake Street at I-35W in both directions will be closed from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday through Wednesday. During those hours, motorists will be detoured in the following manner:

Westbound traffic will be directed south on Portland Avenue, then west on 31st Street and back north on 1st Avenue.

Eastbound traffic will be sent south on Stevens Avenue, east on 31st and north on 2nd Avenue.

Metro Transit bus Route 21 will also be on detour from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Eastbound uses will follow the detour spelled out above. Westbound buses will turn left on 4th Avenue, right on 31st Street and right on 1st Avenue back to Lake Street.

On Sept. 8, a westbound truck in the left lane struck the outside bridge beam on the northbound side of I-35W bridge over Lake Street. The impact fractured the beam, which is what MnDOT is now fixing, said Nick Carpenter, a MnDOT spokesman.

Minor repairs were made immediately following the crash, which sent concrete spilling onto the pavement.

MnDOT says it will take until mid-November to finish all the repairs. At times northbound I-35W traffic will be reduced by a lane between now an then. The bus stop also remains closed, but will reopen when the project is complete.
