These days, it's good to be a geek.

Geeks have taken over the movie industry (how many superhero movies did you see last year?) and even that über-geek, Conan O'Brien, is bumping Jay Leno from "The Tonight Show."

Now the geeks are taking over one of the Twin Cities' coolest bars, Clubhouse Jäger. A new weekly night called "JagerCon: Sci-Fi Tuesdays" invites bargoers to "mingle with like-minded sci-fi geeks, discuss 'D&D' strategies and use that Captain Picard impression you've been perfecting to pick up chicks at the bar."

Each week, a different movie from the sci-fi pantheon is screened above the dance floor. This Tuesday it's the director's cut of the 1982 Harrison Ford film "Blade Runner." The night was created by two L'Etoile magazine alums, Kate Iverson and Beth Hammarlund. They will also screen TV shows such as "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Star Trek."

To help their fellow geeks open up a bit, the bar will offer two-for-one drinks all night.

Bomp went the beat

A little dance-music renaissance is happening in the Twin Cities. If you're sick of dancing to Top 40, there are plenty of alternatives, including the popular "Too Much Love," "Get Cryphy" and "Honeymoon" nights. Now another progressive dance night has popped up: "Bomp," happening monthly at Bedlam Theater on Minneapolis' Cedar-Riverside area.

It's hosted by two DJs whom dance fans should be familiar with: Shannon Blowtorch (formerly of Pi) and Wes Winship (of design group Burlesque of North America). Each month, the duo brings in DJs known for putting their own spin on the classic dance party.

Fashion action, week 2

Do I sense a bit of hostility in our little fashion/design world? Earlier this week it was the "Fashion Feud" event at 7th Street Entry. Now we have two more showdowns. First is Metro magazine's third annual "Fashion Fight Night" Saturday at the Uppercut Boxing Gym. This competitive event pits six teams of photographers and models against each other in a "head-to-head fashion photography shootout" -- all inside a boxing ring. Unfortunately, it's already sold out.

The week's other skirmish is "The Duel of the Design" at Graves 601. Two teams (made up of a design firm, a chef and a florist) will have two hours to create a tabletop for eight and craft a dinner menu -- while an audience watches.

Coming to St. Anthony Falls

Here's an update on two bars planning to open this summer in Minneapolis' East Hennepin area. While the area is famous for its dive bars, these spots offer much more. The first is Gas-tro-nome, a gastropub by two Nicollet Island Inn vets that will serve gourmet food in a casual bar setting. Located at 314 E. Hennepin Av., it will also offer an enormous whiskey list. The other is Blue Skies, the wine bar project at 24 University Av. SE. that was temporarily put on hold. It's back, and should be open by August. The spot will feature an Enomatic, a crafty wine-serving system that lets customers sample as many as 100 different wines in portions as small as an ounce.

Get your beads on You know it's a party when there are beads involved. The big Carnaval Brasileiro is back this year at Trocaderos. The wild night will feature music by Beira Mar Brasil, plus carnival masks, professional samba dancers and Brazilian food.

It's not too late to celebrate Mardi Gras. Tonight the Lounge is throwing a party called "Circus Vargas." Expect circus performers and beads for all clubgoers.
