The new public library in Newport now has more than 3,900 items in its catalog and, because of volunteer help, it stays open 28 hours a week.

The city took over operation of the library in 2012 after Washington County closed the branch because of budget reductions.

However, the county is assisting Newport with oversight and management of the library.

Now a part of the city's Community Center, the library relies on donations from residents. Attendant Jamie Smith is organizing a cataloging system.

Services at the library and community center include books, magazines, movies, games, public computers, a copier, a fax machine and wireless access, said Renee Helm, the city's executive analyst.

Meanwhile, Washington County installed a kiosk at Newport City Hall for residents to check out books through the county library, Helm said.

Washington County has a similar arrangement with Marine on St. Croix.
