The legislative assistant to Sen. Scott Newman, R-Hutchinson, whom Newman blamed for sending out an email that led to an ethics complaint against the state senator, has left her job. Senate Republicans said Wednesday that Newman's assistant, Kim Kelley, was "no longer with the Minnesota Senate" but declined to provide details. Michael Brodkorb, the executive assistant to Senate Majority Leader Amy Koch and the deputy chair of the state Republican Party, said Kelley left her job on Friday but said privacy laws prohibited him from saying more. Late last month, an email signed by Kelley was sent to the Minnesota Nurses Association saying that "Senator Newman will not see any organizations that donated to/supported his opponent" in the November elections. Newman blamed Kelley for the email. "It's just an error, that's all," he explained. "It's clearly my responsibility. "But this is a brand new [legislative assistant]. . .what she put out is not – it is not my policy," said Newman, who sits on the influential Senate Health and Human Services Committee. Newman, through a spokesperson, declined comment Wednesday on Kelley's departure. After DFLers filed a complaint, a Senate ethics panel decided not to investigate the incident. Newman, under oath, told the panel that he knew nothing of the email before it was sent and had never advocated such a policy.
