Mainstream modern design

Target has announced a new home furnishings line, targeted to consumers who love the mod look of an Eames chair, Saarinen side table and George Nelson sunburst clock — but find many retro designs a bit spendy for their budgets. Modern by Dwell Magazine, a collaboration between Target and the shelter magazine, is a 120-piece collection priced for the masses. Many of the midcentury-inspired accessories, tabletop and home decor pieces cost under $100. Condo-sized compact furnishings, including a lounge chair, upholstered pouf and bookshelf, range from $49.99 to $399.99. But you'll have to wait until Dec. 27 when Target debuts Modern in select stores and online.

Restoration Hardware also is going more mod, with the recent launch of its new RH Modern collection, an assortment of furnishings, lighting and decor with a minimalist aesthetic, developed in collaboration with designers around the world. The front portion of Restoration Hardware's store in Edina now features RH Modern, as well as an interactive RH Design Atelier, a studio offering a workspace for architects, designers and customers to design a single room or an entire home, inside and out. You can check it out at the Galleria, France Av. S. and 69th St., Edina.
