New marriage amendment opposition ad features 'Golden Rule'

The ad features Edina couple who are voting no, saying the amendment does not meet Minnesota's values.

With just two weeks before the election, Minnesotans United for All Families has released a new television advertisement saying the marriage amendment is out of synch with the state's values.

The ad features John and Elizabeth, an Edina couple who say they are voting no because they believe in treating others as they would like to be treated.

"Our parents taught us the Golden Rule – not judging others and treating others the way we'd like to be treated," Elizabeth says in the ad.

"And those are the values we're showing our children by voting no on the marriage amendment," John says.

The couple, who have been married for 27 years, say that all loving and committed couples should be allowed to marry.

In releasing the ad, Richard Carlbom, campaign manager for Minnesotans United, said: "This amendment limits a basic freedom for some Minnesotans just because of who they are. Marriage is about love, commitment and responsibility."

This is the fourth ad from Minnesotans United, the lead group trying to defeat the measure. The campaign would not say how many more ads it will release before the election.

The ad will run statewide as part of a multimillion-dollar ad buy for the last two weeks of the campaign, said campaign spokeswoman Kate Brickman.
