Update: All vouchers tickets were given away by 1 p.m. Thursday, said Michael Pewther, senior director of sales at Spirit. About 25 people were left without a voucher as the Spirit reps drove away in their yellow bus.

Want to try the new, budget airline in the Twin Cities without a big investment? Spirit Airlines is giving away 1,000 certificates for roundtrip travel at Travel One Inc. The giveaway starts at noon May 31 in the parking lot of Travel One (8009 34th Av. S., Bloomington), the corner of American Boulevard and 34th Av. S.

The certificate is for 20,000 points, which can be used to 14 cities, including Atlanta, Atlantic City, Boston, Charleston, Chicago, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Denver, Detroit, Latrobe, Myrtle Beach, New York, Niagara Falls, Plattsburgh and Washington DC.

There was a giveaway on Tuesday that received scant press and everyone who stopped by got a voucher. But Thursday's event should bring larger crowds. Still, Spirit isn't expecting to get rid of all 1,000 vouchers, said Michael Pewther, senior director of sales at Spirit. "We didn't get rid of all 1,000 certificates on Tuesday, but we'll be there on Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. or until they're gone," he said.

The gotchas? You must be 18. You have to register for Spirit's frequent flier program. The voucher must be registered within 7 days and you have 30 days to book the flight, which can be between now and February. There is at least a $5 charge for taxes and fees, but fees vary based on the destination and the booking date. There is also the fee ($28 to $33) for carry-on baggage unless it's small enough to fit under the seat (maximum size 16 x 14 by 12-inches).

Spirit now flies nonstop from MSP to Chicago O'Hare three times daily from the Humphrey Terminal. It also flies nonstop daily to Las Vegas, which is not one of the cities on the list for a free flight.
