Don't look back in anger

Ian McKellen goes "Looking for Lowry" in this insightful tribute to Manchester artist L.S. Lowry, who consistently proved that there's nothing lonelier than a stick figure in a crowd. Oasis' Noel Gallagher is among the fans weighing in on the painter's illuminating work, which is just now getting the recognition it so richly deserves.

Falling star

In "The Family," three-time Oscar nominee Joan Allen ("The Contender") goes slumming as a gubernatorial candidate who isn't above using the re-emergence of her longtime missing son as a campaign issue. Shonda Rhimes pupil Jenna Bans does an adequate job of setting the wheels in motion for this mystery thriller, but I couldn't get over the idea that Allen should be engaged in more ambitious work.

Joy ride

Alec Baldwin is the biggest name attached to "Rachel Dratch's Late Night Snack," a new collection of comedy shorts that utilizes the talk-show format, animation and lost VHS footage. Baldwin's contribution has him offering relationship advice while driving passengers around town. Guess you never do know what you'll get with Uber.
