Commander in chief

"Independence Day," the 1996 film that moved Will Smith up to the A-list, is packed with explosions, but the most impressive fireworks show comes when the president, played by Bill Pullman, gives an impassioned speech to inspire the troops. "Pullman in 2016" would make a nice bumper sticker, don't you think? 6 p.m. Saturday, AMC

Doll house

"West Wing" veteran Bradley Whitford returns to Washington to host "A Capitol Fourth" from the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. Guests include Barry Manilow, Alabama and Nicole Scherzinger. After all, there's no better way to celebrate the nation's birthday than with a Pussycat Doll. 7 p.m. Saturday, TPT, Ch. 2

Jaws of death

The waters get murky as National Geographic Wild kicks off its third annual SharkFest with "Shark Alley," a look at how our fin-feathered friends hunt down afternoon snacks during the world's most populous sardine runs. Look for more ocean drama during prime-time hours throughout the week. 7 p.m. Sunday, NGW

Housewarming party

"Big Brother" has been around so long, you could rename it "Aging Grandfather," but the reality series is as popular as it ever was, which means CBS would be blowing a golden opportunity if it weren't planning on launching "CSI: Under One Roof." Julie "ChenBot" recharges her batteries just long enough to assume hosting duties. 7:01 p.m., Sunday, WCCO, Ch. 4
