• Sleep is not just a period of rest, but a time when the brain and body recharge, scientists say. During sleep, the brain makes memories and the body releases infection-fighting hormones.

• Lack of sleep can lead to irritability and depression and may contribute to obesity, heart disease and high blood pressure.

• Adults generally need seven to eight hours of sleep per night; teenagers generally need nine.
