National teachers union president to visit Bloomington schools on Wednesday

National Education Association President Dennis Van Roekel to visit Bloomington Public Schools on Wednesday

The president of one of the two national teachers' unions will tour Bloomington Public Schools on Wednesday as part of a national back-to-school tour.

Dennis Van Roekel, president of the National Education Association, will visit Hillcrest Community School and Olson Middle School tomorrow. He will be joined by Education Minnesota President Denise Specht.

After the tours, he will host a meet and greet with state and local union members, school board members and parent groups at Olson Middle School to discuss education and labor issues.Among the likely topics for discussion: Common Core standards, school safety and early education.

The National Education Association (NEA) is the nation's largest union for educators. Members of Education Minnesota hold memberships with both NEA, the American Federation of Teachers and the AFL-CIO.
